You don’t have to be a bowls player to appreciate what happened in Wickford on Tuesday, 19th August.
72 ladies came together at Runwell Hospital Bowls Club for their annual Ladies Celebration Day — and it was an absolute pleasure for Careclean Essex to be this year’s sponsor.
There was laughter, a bit of friendly competition, and that unmistakable sense of Essex pride. You could feel it as soon as you walked onto the green: people who care, who show up for each other, and who make time for the things that matter.
We’ve always said that cleaning carpets isn’t just about the carpet — it’s about what it says about the people who live there.
And the same goes for bowls clubs.
Runwell Hospital Bowls Club isn’t just a sports club. It’s a space where people move, talk, connect, and belong. The members take pride in doing things well, in keeping their space welcoming, and in looking out for others — especially those who might be nervous about trying something new.
That’s why we chose to support this event. Because what Runwell Bowls Club stands for matches what we’ve built Careclean on: proper service, long-standing trust, and people who do things right even when no one’s watching.
Runwell Hospital Bowls Club has over 70 active members — and they welcome both new bowlers and total beginners. Many find their way to the club after retirement or after moving into the area, looking for a new hobby or a way to meet people without pressure.
The club plays host to league games, social matches, and friendly afternoons. And when the season ends, members still meet up for short mat bowls at the Runwell Staff Social Club just next door.
But what really stands out? It’s the warmth. You’ll get a proper cuppa, a biscuit (or two), and someone happy to show you how to play — no school hats or pleated skirts required.
“We take our bowling seriously,” one member said with a smile, “but if we don’t win — there’s always another day.”
The green was full from morning to late afternoon, with 72 women taking part in the Celebration Day matches! Many were dressed in crisp whites, full of quiet focus. Spectators lined the benches, the weather held, and there was that wonderful hum of conversation you only get at local events where everyone knows someone.
It’s easy to forget how powerful local spaces can be — especially ones run by volunteers and supported by members who give up their time so others can feel welcome.
We saw that care in every detail at Runwell. And whether you’re a seasoned player or someone who just wants to try it once, this is a place you’ll feel safe and seen.
To everyone who helped organise the day — and especially to the women who stepped up to compete — thank you. It was a privilege to sponsor something with such heart.
