  1. First of all, did you know that October was originally the eighth month of the Roman calendar? The name comes from the Latin word “octo” meaning eight. After January and February were added to the Calendar, October became the 10th month!
  2. The Anglo-Saxons called October Winterfylleth. This means ‘fullness’ of winter.
  3. The Hunt For Red October, starring Sean Connery, is the only film with ‘October’ in its title ever to win an Oscar. It’s category was best sound editing if you’re wondering!
  4. There are lots of famous people born in October. The list includes: Hillary Clinton, Bill Gates, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Julie Andrews, Hugh Jackman, Katy Perry, and Christopher Columbus!
  5. In the UK, October is the Awareness Month for Lupus, Breast Cancer, National Cyber Security and Domestic Violence.
  6. Also, it is National Cholesterol Month, Black History Month, International Walk to School Month and International School Library Month.
  7. No Shakespeare play or sonnet mentions October!
  8. The birthstones for October are the tourmaline and the opal.
  9. On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in America. Yes a 2nd Christopher Columbus related fact!
  10. Finally, in the Southern hemisphere, October is the seasonal equivalent to April.
